Sydney's Trusted Gearbox & Transmission Repair Specialists.

From DSG mechatronic units to ZF 8-speed automatics, we diagnose, repair and recondition transmissions for every European and Japanese make — honestly, and without the dealer price tag.

Transmission problems don't fix themselves — they get worse, fast. West Ryde Service Centre has been diagnosing and repairing gearboxes across Sydney since 1981, from daily drivers to high-performance European vehicles. Whether it's a VW DSG mechatronic fault, a BMW ZF gearbox slipping, or a worn clutch, every job starts with a proper diagnostic scan. We'll tell you exactly what's wrong, what your options are — repair, recondition or replacement — and what each costs before any work goes ahead.

Our Gearbox & Transmission Services.

West Ryde Service Centre

DSG & S-tronic Mechatronic Repairs

The most common VAG transmission fault is the mechatronic unit — the electronic control that shifts the dual-clutch gearbox. We diagnose and repair DSG and S-tronic mechatronic issues for VW, Audi and Skoda, from solenoid replacement to full mechatronic rebuilds. We also reference our detailed VW DSG mechatronic guide covering symptoms and causes.

West Ryde Service Centre

ZF Automatic Transmission Service

BMW and Mercedes-Benz vehicles use ZF 8-speed automatics — superb gearboxes, but they need correct fluid and filter changes on schedule or the valve body fails. We service, diagnose and repair ZF transmissions with the proper diagnostic equipment and factory-specification fluids.

West Ryde Service Centre

Clutch Replacement & Repair

Manual or dual-clutch, a slipping clutch leaves you stranded. We replace clutches for all makes — entry-level hatchbacks, European performance cars, heavy-duty 4WDs — with quality parts and proper flywheel machining or replacement where required. Dual-mass flywheels diagnosed on-site.

West Ryde Service Centre

Transmission Fluid Service

Manufacturer-specified fluid and filter changes at the correct interval are the single best thing you can do for an automatic or DSG transmission. We flush, refill and seal with the correct specification (VW G052182, ZF Lifeguard, etc.) every time.

Diagnostic Scan & Fault Code Analysis

Most transmission warning lights are misdiagnosed as 'new gearbox needed'. A proper diagnostic scan with factory-level equipment often reveals a sensor, solenoid or wiring fault — a fraction of the cost of a gearbox. We start with the scan, not with the wallet.

West Ryde Service Centre

Gearbox Reconditioning & Replacement

When a gearbox genuinely needs reconditioning or replacement, we'll tell you straight. We recondition and replace manual and automatic gearboxes for all makes, using quality exchanged units or full rebuilds where parts availability allows — saving thousands versus a dealer replacement.

I recently took my RS3 to WRSC Performance to have an eventuri turbo elbow and intake installed, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Shunt and his team were professional, honest, and upfront from the start. They explained exactly what would be done, kept me informed throughout the process, and completed the work within the timeframe they promised. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding, and it’s clear they really know these cars inside and out. If you’re looking for true RS3 specialists who take pride in their work, WRSC Performance is the place to go. Thanks again to Shunt and the team, I highly recommend them!

Outstanding service. Very quick, professional and just all round above and beyond. Found from the minute I walked in I was welcomed and given the time of day. Got two cards checked for a pinkslip on short notice and they processed both extremely quickly during my lunch breaks. Wish I could rate higher!

As someone who works in the automotive industry myself and pays close attention to workmanship, service quality, and attention to detail, I can honestly say the team at West Ryde Service Centre (WRSC) have been exceptional. They’ve looked after both my G80 M3 and F95 X5M for servicing and tuning, and every experience has been professional from start to finish. Their communication, transparency, and genuine care for the cars really stand out. What I appreciate most is the attention to detail — not just mechanically, but in the overall customer experience as well. It’s rare to find a workshop that combines technical knowledge with such high standards of service and consistency. You can tell these guys are passionate about what they do, and they treat every vehicle with respect. It gives real peace of mind knowing the cars are in capable hands. Highly recommend WRSC to anyone looking for a trustworthy workshop that genuinely cares about quality.

step by step

Our Gearbox & Transmission Process.

Write down what you're noticing — jerking, hesitation, grinding, warning lights — and book online or call ahead. We'll prioritise gearbox diagnostics.

Every gearbox starts with a full diagnostic scan: fault codes, live data, road test where needed. We don't guess — we diagnose before quoting.

We explain exactly what we found, what's causing it, and your options — repair, recondition or replace — with a transparent quote for each.

With your go-ahead, we proceed: DSG mechatronic repair, ZF transmission service, clutch replacement or full gearbox rebuild — using quality parts and correct fluids.

After any gearbox work we road-test to confirm the fault is gone and shifting is smooth — then clear the codes and re-scan to confirm.

All gearbox and transmission work is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee. If a problem we caused, we fix it — free.

The Right Transmission Specialist for Every Make

From VW DSG mechatronic units to BMW ZF 8-speed automatics, we diagnose transmissions for every make and model. Under Australian Consumer Law, you’re never required to use a dealership to keep your warranty valid — and correctly serviced and repaired transmissions protect it.

// EUROPEAN TRANSMISSION SPECIALISTS

Driving an Audi, BMW, Mercedes or VW?
Your Transmission Needs a Specialist.

European transmissions are different. DSG and S-tronic mechatronic units, ZF 8-speed automatics, and dual-mass flywheel clutch systems each need specific diagnostic equipment and expertise. Our European Car Servicing page covers the specialist tools and expertise your vehicle needs — or read our detailed VW DSG mechatronic guide for common symptoms and causes.

Gearbox & Transmission FAQ

Jerky or harsh shifting, hesitation when accelerating, grinding or whining noises, slipping gears, a burning smell, or a transmission warning light on the dash. If you notice any of these, book a diagnostic scan — the longer you drive, the more damage you risk. Most transmission faults start as a solenoid, sensor or fluid issue, not a complete gearbox failure.
Every gearbox diagnosis starts with a full diagnostic scan using factory-level equipment — VCDS for VAG vehicles, ISTA for BMW, or Xentry for Mercedes. We pull fault codes, check live data (clutch pressures, solenoid activations, temperature), and road-test where needed. Only then do we quote — because, in our experience, most ‘gearbox needs replacing’ calls are actually a sensor or solenoid fault that costs a fraction of the price.
Yes. DSG and S-tronic are VAG’s dual-clutch transmissions, and the mechatronic unit — the electronic control module — is the most common failure point. We diagnose and repair mechatronic faults: solenoid replacement, wiring repairs, valve body issues and full mechatronic rebuilds. We’ve written a detailed guide on VW DSG mechatronic problems that covers symptoms, causes and what’s involved in the repair.
It depends on the fault. If it’s a solenoid, sensor, clutch pack or mechatronic issue, repair is usually the right call and costs a fraction of a replacement. If internal gears or shafts are damaged, reconditioning may be possible. If the casing is cracked or the gearbox is beyond economic repair, a quality exchanged unit is the most cost-effective option. We’ll diagnose first, then give you honest options with transparent pricing for each.
It varies widely based on the fault and your vehicle: a diagnostic scan and solenoid replacement might be a few hundred dollars, while a full DSG mechatronic rebuild or ZF transmission recondition runs into the thousands. The key is starting with a proper diagnosis — we quote every job before any work goes ahead, and we only recommend what’s actually needed.
It depends on the transmission type. VAG DSG fluid is typically every 60,000 km or 4 years. ZF 8-speed automatics accept ‘lifetime’ fluid but ZF themselves recommend 80,000–100,000 km for normal driving. Manual gearboxes usually every 80,000–100,000 km. If your transmission doesn’t have a dipstick, don’t assume it’s sealed for life — we can check the level and condition during a service.
No. Under Australian Consumer Law, you’re never required to use a dealership for servicing or repairs to keep your warranty valid — as long as the work is done by a qualified technician using quality parts and the manufacturer’s specified procedures, which is exactly what we do.
Yes. Clutch replacement is part of our transmission service — manual clutches, dual-clutch assemblies, and dual-mass flywheels. We diagnose whether the problem is actually the clutch, the dual-mass flywheel, or the gearbox itself before recommending any replacement, and we use quality parts matched to your vehicle’s specification.
